Generator buying guide: petrol or inverter?

Whether it is for power cuts, a remote site or a market stall, a generator has to match what you plug into it.

Add up your watts

List what you want to run at the same time and add the wattage on each label. Motors (pumps, fridges, compressors, grinders) need extra power to start, so leave a healthy margin.

Conventional petrol generators

Strong, simple and good value. Ideal for power tools, lights and pumps on site.

Inverter generators

Produce cleaner power that is safer for laptops, phones, TVs and electronic equipment. They are quieter and use less fuel at low loads.

Safety

Always run a generator outdoors, away from doors and windows. Never connect it to house wiring without a proper changeover switch fitted by an electrician.
